We found another hidden jewel of Northland

After Graham's whirlwind trip to Scotland for his daughter's graduation, we took the caravan to Kerikeri for the long weekend. The weather wasn't up to much so we went exploring. After the (always for us) compulsory stop at Get Fudged, and Makana Chocolates we took off towards Waipapa Road but turned right at the crossroads towards Rangitane. There we discovered the beautiful Aroha Island, about 12 km from Kerikeri township.Aroha Island is owned by the Queen Elizabeth II National Trust and is…See More

What a way to celebrate a birthday

On Saturday we took a group to the Matakana vineyard trail. The occasion? - two of the number were celebrating birthdays and invited a small group of friends to join them. First stop was Ransom where Marion and Robin entertained the group for a lunch hamper which included 3 delightful wines to match. Then on to Ascension with its plush continental looking exterior, Hyperion which operates from a converted cowshed, Heron's Flight with their distinctive Italian grape wines and Brick Bay glass…See More

Which BNI chapter do you belong to?
Northland
My country:
New Zealand
My city/town:
Whangarei
About me:
Graham and Wendy Hawkes are passionate about Northland and what it has to offer both overseas and local visitors – and even other local Northlanders who haven’t necessarily seen it all.

No strangers to tourism, we first set up a bed and breakfast unit in our downstairs flat. Over three years we have entertained visitors from UK, USA, Canada, Germany, France, Australia and New Zealand North and South Islands.

We first had the idea of a travel club while staying in Hawkes Bay, where Wendy’s mother lives, and belongs to the Bay Tours club. That club became the model for our own travel club, and Skylark Tours was born. Like most of our members, we enjoy seeing new places, making new friends and the odd glass of wine – except when driving. The travel club was the first step in establishing Skylark Tours and it was a natural progression to extend to personalised tours for the overseas and local markets.

We have an eclectic taste in music and this is reflected in the background selection played through the bus’s sound system wherever we go. We also sing – so you could be engaged in a sing-a-long at the drop of a hat.

Wendy is a trained singer and well up on things musical theatre. Graham also enjoys singing but his passion is food - he is a very competent gourmet cook. He just loves to talk food and creates some great kiwi recipes. We both play golf, enjoy photography and outdoor activities.

All in all, we love showing people around Northland – the birthplace of our nation. It has so much to offer both within and outside the main tourist routes.
My business name:
Skylark Tours
About my business:
We specialise in small group and family tours to all points between Auckland and Cape Reinga. We go to other places too, but Northland is our specialty, so look no further for friendly, personalised service.

We want to get to know you while we tour. That’s the beauty of a small intimate group. The bus is yours to go wherever you want in your own timeframe.

Tours are tailor-made to your interests.
That’s right! You tell us what your interests are and we will sort out a tour to suit. Our knowledge of Northland and attractions off the main tourist routes enables us to find places of interest to cater for your tastes exclusively.

Flexible stop offs
We just love doing things “off the cuff”, so if you see something you want to do that is not in the tour plan, we will just do it.
