There's a story of the well known Scott Monty who is director of social media at Ford. He was giving a speech when someone in the audience kept challenging the ROI of social media.

Scott is an analytical guy, but he got exasperated and finally said, "What's the ROI of putting your pants on in the morning?"

Good point - and the challenge continues; what is the ROI of your phone?

They're all important to your business - but do you measure and expect a tangible return on every nuance of your business?

Maybe sometimes you need to stop asking about the ROI and jump in, because you know it's important on many more levels ?

Good point - and one of the great things about Social Networking is that you can do it 'without' putting your pants on first! I am hoping that this site will give BNI members who are new to Social Networking (I definitely include myself in this category!) an opportunity to dip their toe into the water and give it a try in a friendly and business related context.
Thanks for all your help with this Fiona - the 'Way the World is Doing Business' is changing and as a "baby boomer" it is good to have your guidance.

nice one! that gave me a good laugh Graham, and a mind picture I didn't need (hundreds of BNI'ers with no pants on...eeek). You can take the social media thingy right back to givers gain. Post interesting stuff, take the time to comment of other peoples interesting stuff, give postive feedback, and you can't help but get some good vibes come back your way

Reading this, I immediately thought of Al & Laura Ries' new book "War In The Boardroom". Its basic premise is that marketing and management don't understand each other because their brains are different. Management people tend to be left-brain thinkers: they are verbal, logical and analytical. Marketing people tend to be right-brain thinkers: they are visual, intuitive and holistic.
Scott Monty must be a marketing person and the challenger in the audience must be a management type!
