Great 60 seconds make you remember that member. Bad ones help you forget!! We had a member stand up this week and go, I have forgotten what I was going to say, and sat down!

One of the most enjoyable things we do as a chapter is when we draw each others names from a hat and do another members 60 seconds.

Last year when we did this I drew a member who provides industry specific first aid training. I asked him before the meeting to collapse on the floor just as I stood up to speak. The idea was to see how people would react to a genuine first aid event.

Well he collapsed and went into a fit. Luckily several members did try to administer first aid. I let them off the hook quickly and the room breathed a huge sigh of relief. I then asked how many would know what to do in a situation like that. The answer was not many.

I'd asked Rob for permission to make a special offer for a basic first aid training for members and during raps and referrals Rob got referrals from at least half the members wanting to attend that training.

We have a lady, Sharon Beckett-Hire Plantz, in our chapter. She did an absolutely awesome 10 minutes, she brought in mini pots filled with that green foam stuff, and all the flowers/greenery to fill and let us loose. It was great, will always remember it and still have the pot in my office!! The flowers have long since died though..

Here is an example of a great 60 second in the form of poetry. This was written by the dynamic duo Maureen and Ross Collins-Wright of Ross's Plumbing whose business is in BNI Manukau and BNI Travel Growth Chapters.

The piping that carries
Your hot and cold water
Will it last for ever?
Or will it falter

And if/when it falters
What does it do?
It can leak throught the walls
And you go OH POOH!

You see this pipe
Was not made to last
After 20 0dd years
It's breaking down fast

Then who do you call
To repair the leak
Or re-pipe the house
With their creative mystique

Ross's Plumbing
With their team of guys
Will perform their magic
Before your very eyes

Who do you know
In this situation
That might need our help
Even a smidgeon

Refer us today
To quote and repair
Give them our card
And tell them we care!

I have just got back from our meeting this morning, and have had to jump straight on here to let you all know how our 60 seconds went.
Well last week I had a hat that I passed around the group, in the hat was pieces of paper with words on, each member took a piece of paper and before they looked at it had the option to change. The word on the paper was to be their prop for this week. Everyone in the chapter took on the challenge, we had an accountant with a Wig, real estate - flag, recruitment agency - bag of crisps, bank - flower, Hair dresser - teddy bear, finance - apple, Civil engineers - sunglasses, Health shop - tennis racket, property consultant - toilet roll, coffee machine supplier - shoe, currency trade - torch, medispa - balloon, Lawyer - box, Computer techie - umbrella and myself a graphic designer had a wooden spoon. It was a fantastic morning everyone was fired up and it was a good laugh and most of all very memorable. A great big well done to you all.

I sent an email out last Friday to the chapter members, saying that this weeks challenge was to use the word 'TIME' in their 60 seconds. I was very impress, all the members (except 2) took on the challenge, and they didn't only use it once... one member used it 8 times. Well done guys.

Thought i'd just have a wee brag about my 10 minute speech yesterday. I picked out and hand wrote into 28 greeting cards, one for each if our chapter members and 4 for guests (we actually had 5 guests, it was busy morning!). Each message was tailored to the individual - having been in the chapter 4 years i know people pretty well now!

These cards were given out at the start of my 10 minutes. During my talk i mentioned how email marketing open-rates can vary hugely but many industrys display opening rates of 10- 30%. So 1-3 in 10 of your email marketing messages get looked at.

I then asked for a raise of hands from those who had opened their envelopes and looked at their personalised cards.

almost 100%

WOOT!

I suppose this displays the importance of props and building them 'actively' into your talk, as Mike has mentioned below.

Work stories are great, particularly when there is some humour involved.
