Hi All,

My name is Chris Westeneng and I am an independent building inspector in Christchurch.

With some of the stories I have heard about the EQC inspectors it pays to get an independent opinion. A lot of the EQC inspectors would not have a clue about buildings, let alone say they are safe to live in or not.

I am speaking from experience as I have a rental property that was badly damaged in the September quake, EQC came round not long after and spent about 5min on site and said "not much damage here" when my insurance co came they said this house should be knocked down. We have finally be paid the full amount by EQC after I requested (several times) for a re inspection.

Hi Chris,

An interesting experience. In my job with an Earthquake Rebuild Team here in Christchurch I have also heard of similar "assessments" by seemingly unqualified EQC inspectors. Some of them appear to have little or no knowledge of our local building products or building code requirements when it comes to repair work. Home owners would be wise to seek a second opinion if they are unhappy with the first assessment of their property.

We have used Chris to inspect two properties for my daughter, and both times were impressed by his attention to detail. It is not surprising that he is concerned by the lack of standards being demonstrated by EQC.
